The use of laser energy to remove hair works best for those with fair skin and dark hair, because it is the dark pigment of the hair root or follicle, which absorbs the energy. So those areas such as under arms, and bikini lines which have not tanned, are ideal. Other tanned areas, like an upper lip, and faces, can be difficult and cause pain with treatments.

Hair grows unevenly, and the laser will affect only actively growing hair follicles. This means that each area will need several treatments, often weeks or months apart. Once the treated area hair has fallen out, any new hair growth should be treated as soon as possible, and this cycle should be repeated, as the new hair emerges. Often new hair growth is much less dark, more soft and downy, and more acceptable.

Treatment takes only a few minutes, depending on the size of the area treated. Pain is proportional to the amount of tan or color, with pale skin usually being painless. Some red reaction can be expected, which usually passes off over night, and is usually not noticeable the next day.
