Calf Implants

Calf implants are solid silicone rubber implants, which are inserted on top of the calf muscle, under its sheath. Two are needed for each leg, over the medial and the lateral gastrocnemius muscle. A problem, of course, is that a scar, at the back of the knee, is required to put the prosthesis in. Another associated problem can be that the prosthesis can come out through the healing wound - especially in the early postoperative period. Early walking is difficult; the use of a high-heeled boot is good to help take the tightness off the muscle.

Recovery is difficult, because you will need to rest with you legs up for at least a full week to ten days. Once healing is complete, by one month, you will be able to use your legs fully, and not worry about the implant. Late complications are rare once healing is complete, so it is very important that you schedule sufficient time at the beginning to heal properly.

Remember that the bigger the implant, the more problems you can expect. The smaller the implant, the easier it fits in your tissues, the more natural it will look, and the less you are to have trouble.

Consultations are by appointment, on Mondays and Thursdays, 7:30am - 3pm
